Fumiko is in an unhappy marriage. Her only solace is her two children and a poetry club that proves to be her main escape, allowing her to visit the city. There she meets Taku Hori, the husband of her friend Kinuko who, like her, writes poems. She becomes increasingly attracted to him, but Fumiko is diagnosed with breast cancer. While her poems are being published, she undergoes a mastectomy. The young woman then discovers her passion for a journalist who comes to visit her in hospital.
