The tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet, written by Shakespeare in 1597, is one of the most recognised, most reproduced and most performed plays in the world. Again and again, with a few creative liberties, the story is repeated: In Verona, two enemy families, the Montagues and the Capulets, watch their children fall in love. "Two predestined lovers" as we read in Shakespeare's work.  Despite family rivalries, Romeo and Juliet meet and fall deeply in love. Defying social conventions and the hatred that has separated their families for decades, they marry secretly, but a series of tragic misunderstandings and events culminates in the premature death of both, sealing their love as a story of forbidden and cursed love. In this version by Teatro da Terra, directed by Maria João Luís and translated and adapted by Fernando Villas-Boas, we'll see a show that draws on Shakespeare's words but also reflects a current vision. With its contemporary language and bold visual aesthetic, ROMEO AND JULIET explores timeless themes such as love, violence, hatred and reconciliation.
