His mother - who is unwilling to give up permanent custody, has handed over François, a ten-year-old boy, to an orphanage. His destructive behaviour precipitates his move from the home of a long-term foster family to the care of a benevolent elderly couple. A moving film about childhood, Maurice Pialat's first feature, is a semi-documentary style work that uses only amateur actors. A sort of reverse of "The Four Hundred Blows" (Pialat is said to have taken Truffaut's film as an anti-model), it is the painful story of a turbulent pre-adolescent in a foster family and his emotional maladjustments.
