The Town Hall of Vila Nova de Famalicão has taken the popular saying "com melão vinho bom" (with melon comes good wine) to the letter and, on the weekend of 19 to 21 August, will combine the unique and spicy flavour of oak peel melon with the refreshing green wine of the region.
"Verde Melão" is the name of the initiative promoted by the municipality that will take place in the Praça - Municipal Market with the participation of three melon producers from the municipality - Aires Mesquita, Augusto Martins and Joaquim Gonçalves.
Also known as champagne melon due to its effervescence and release of gas, the oak peel melon is a product with unique characteristics that depends on the weather conditions and on the existence of a favourable microclimate that only exists between Minho and Douro Litoral.
Three wine producers (Casa Agrícola de Compostela, Vinhos Castro and Frutivinhos) and smoked meat producers (Fumeiro do Fernando, Fumeiro Rosa Mendes and Talho Divino Salvador) from the municipality will also be present.
Besides the sale and tasting of typical regional products, the initiative also includes a show cooking by famalicense Chef Álvaro Costa, on the 20th, with suggestions on the use of oak peel melon and its harmonization.
There will also be plenty of entertainment with concerts - Maria do Sameiro, on the 19th, and Costinha, on the 21st - and DJ Sets. The second day of the fair is dedicated to the emigrant community that at this time of year is returning to its origins and is eager to, once again, enjoy the local products through a Local Products Show.
To enhance and value the traditional products of the municipality and the region among famalicenses and the emigrant community is the main goal of the "Verde Melão" initiative, promoted by the municipality's departments of Tourism and International Relations.
