Festival Vaudeville Rendez-Vous returns with seven shows in Famalicão
21-06-2021
The International Vaudeville Rendez-Vous Festival returns to the cities of Barcelos, Braga, Guimarães and Vila Nova de Famalicão for its seventh edition. Promoted by Teatro da Didascália, the event, which takes place between 19 and 24 July, includes 13 shows - two of which are world premieres and five national premieres. In addition to the 26 performances, with free entrance, there are several mediation activities, which include four creative workshops for all audiences, two masterclasses for arts professionals, a workshop for jugglers and skaters and a pitching session between creators and programmers.
The official presentation of this festival took place last Thursday, 17th June, at the Olaria Museum, in Barcelos, and was attended by representatives of the four municipalities of the Quadrilátero and the artistic director of the Didascália Theatre, Bruno Martins, among others involved in the project. On behalf of the municipality of Famalicão, the Head of the Culture and Tourism Division, Nélson Pereira, pointed out that "we all win with an event that asserts itself and differentiates itself at a national and international level" and that despite not having the resources of the big cities, "when we merge, together we are stronger", referring to the partnership developed through the Cultural Quadrilátero. "It's good to be back and tell the people who visit us and our citizens that they can be in the public space (…) and feel that they can effectively see their artists and the different proposals that we are presenting here", commented Nélson Pereira, who equally reinforced the economic importance of this event, regarding the labour dynamics of the local agents, particularly those linked to the cultural sector.
The relationship with the territory was also highlighted by Bruno Martins, when he said that "the festival has always intended to work, above all, in relation to the city and not to impose itself on that city", highlighting that Vaudeville Rendez-Vous tries to "establish a dialogue with the spaces, either from the point of view of the built heritage (...), or the cultural, immaterial", working the dramaturgy with the spaces where the festival takes place. "To give us an idea of the scale of the festival, there are a total of 150 direct jobs, among artists, producers and technicians", Bruno Martins underlined.
As far as Vila Nova de Famalicão is concerned, the shows will take place from 22nd to 24th July at the amphitheatre of Devesa Park. INAC will start with the world premiere of "Do you still want to dance with me?" on July 22, at 7pm. On the same day, Joel Martí & Pablo Molina will perform "Random", at 10pm. On July 23, Compagnie Troubles Campêtres will present "Là-Bas" at 7pm, followed by the French company CIA KIÄI with "Pulse" at 10pm. The last day of Vaudeville Rendez-Vous will be marked by the shows "Copyleft" by Nicanor de Elia (11h00) and "Wake up!" by Corentin Diana and Leonardo Ferreira (19h00), with Right Way Down closing the festival in famalicense territory with "Váld" at 22h00.
This year's edition will also be marked by the public presentation of the European cooperation project Circuslink - developed by Archaos (Marseille Circus Biennale, France), Dynamo Festival (Denmark), Letni Letna (Czech Republic) and Teatro da Didascália (Portugal) - on the 21st of July, at 15h00, in the garden of Paço dos Duques, which will materialize the internationalisation work that the Festival has been doing for the last two years. In this context, Vaudeville welcomes the world premiere of "Váld", by the Swedish company "Right Way Down", and from this project, the show "Otus", by the Portuguese company Oliveira & Bachtler, which will circulate internationally.
Vaudeville Rendez-Vous is an international festival focused on contemporary circus and transdisciplinary forms for the public space. It was born in Vila Nova de Famalicão, in 2014, as an international performing arts festival with unique characteristics, dedicated exclusively to the universe of physical theatre, circus and cabaret. After two consecutive years of enormous success, with the fostering of local artistic creation and the inclusion of the different arts education institutions present in the county, from theatre to music, through film and plastic arts, the Festival went beyond the borders of the county of Famalicão, tripling its forces and extending to the cities of Braga and Guimarães. Later, it also reached Barcelos, completing the Urban Quadrilateral and establishing itself as the biggest and most important contemporary circus festival in the country.
Throughout its various editions, the event has focused on artistic proposals that aim to discover new forms, reinventing the aesthetic and technical standards usually associated with circus. For the 2021 edition, the Festival distinguishes Étienne Tribu with a creation grant, which resulted in the show "Là-bas", a co-production that will have its national premiere at the event. All the activities of the Festival will take place outdoors but, in this year's edition, it will be necessary to book the tickets, in order to control the entrances and the capacity, which will be much smaller.
